A special New Year’s good-luck charm featuring artwork by Yoshitaka Amano is now available at Fushimi Inari Taisha in Fushimi Ward, Kyoto.
This charm, called “Fukukasane,” is composed of four auspicious elements: an ema (votive plaque) illustrated with next year’s zodiac animal, a sheaf of rice symbolizing a prayer for a bountiful harvest, the sacred “Shirushi-no-Sugi” representing prosperity, and a vermilion-colored “Moriya,” believed to ward off evil and invite good fortune.
The collaboration came to life after Amano donated a set of fusuma paintings to the shrine in May, which included a horse motif. Inspired by this, the shrine requested an original design for next year’s zodiac, the Horse.
The “Fukukasane” charm is already being offered at the shrine for 3,500 yen per set, with approximately 15,000 sets planned for distribution by the end of the year.
We hope this meaningful piece brings a sense of fortune and renewal as we welcome the coming year.
