At the 75th King’s Title Match (Osho-sen) between shogi stars Sota Fujii (the defending champion with six major titles) and Takuya Nagase, something special greeted visitors just two rooms away from the official competition space. Artist Yoshitaka Amano, known internationally for his work on Final Fantasy and other projects, contributed a dedicated ink-painting room at the venue.

Rather than typical exhibition panels, this “ink room” is a quietly immersive space of brushwork and energy, blending traditional inks with contemporary expression. Both Fujii and Nagase paused to appreciate the installation, and players and guests alike responded with admiration for the work’s presence beside the intensity of professional shogi competition.

This unique pairing of classic Japanese art and a top-tier shogi event created a

memorable moment for all who came to Fushimi Inari, bringing soothing artistic depth into the world of one of Japan’s most beloved strategic games.
